  184.      2 years old ... it started on Usenet about 1984 and mail has
  185.      been marked returned for years ... you might want to renotify

  199.      What was this all about, you ask? This was a hoax picked up from
  200.      Usenet (a UNIX conferencing system) and introduced into FidoNet.
  201.      What happened next? I took the message, converted it into a text
  202.      file and broadcast it to the Hosts in my Region (18), IFNA HQ,
  203.      1-3/0, and the Hosts of FireNet and Health Net Echo; with a
  204.      carbon copy back to the originator.
  205.  
  206.      Within 24 hours this message was making the rounds of the U.S.,
  207.      Europe, and the South Pacific; spreading like crazy from Rangoon
  208.      to Reykjavik (figuratively speaking).
  209.  
  210.      When the word came in that this old chestnut was ancient history
  211.      on Usenet, the retraction went out with the same speed. As the
  212.      cancellations went out, the power and potential of this affair
  213.      began to dawn on me.
  214.  
  215.      The International Fido Network represents over one thousand
  216.      publically accessible Nodes, spanning the globe. If every Node
  217.      has only 100 hundred users (very conservative figure), that now

  221.      represents 100,000 people who are exposed to anything put into
  222.      the FidoNet. If each one of those users took the information
  223.      (as a hard-copy) and posted it on a company or community
  224.      bulletin board and thereby exposed 10 more people to the
  225.      information, we have reached one million people. Given more
  226.      people in any part of this equation and the possible exposure
  227.      would be even more tremendous. Consider. This thing has been
  228.      been growing by leaps and bounds since its creation but have you
  229.      stopped to reflect on the enormity of what we are doing?
  230.  
  231.      What we have, in FidoNet, is an incredible, grass roots system
  232.      for communicating world-wide with people and cultures we would
  233.      never touch without it. With the adjuncts of SEAdog and Opus and
  234.      the other systems to come, we have the ability to send NetMail
  235.      anytime, virtually any place. Don't think just of NetMail to a
  236.      Node next door. Think of the possibilities.
  237.  
  238.      Even though this "wish" was not genuine, the speed and power of
  239.      FidoNet was amply demonstrated. Think of this "joke" as a drill
  240.      that demonstrated that FidoNet is alive and well and READY for
  241.      action. There is something to be gained from this experience.
  242.  
  243.      What I propose, now, is setting some standards for a broadcast
  244.      appeal entered into the Fido Network, hereinafter referred to as
  245.      a FidoCast(c).[IFNA, you are welcome to this term.]
  246.  
  247.                 1. The message should be labeled as a FidoCast to
  248.                    indicate handling over the FidoNet.
  249.  
  250.                 2. The contents should be verified as genuine by the
  251.                    Sysop/User entering the FidoCast into the system.
  252.  
  253.                 3. The message should contain a contact name and
  254.                    number (Net/Node, telephone, etc.) of some kind
  255.                    for the originator and/or the requestor.
  256.  
  257.                 4. The message should have an expiration and/or an
  258.                    effective date (good idea, David) to indicate how
  259.                    long it has been in the system and when it may be
  260.                    tossed.
  261.  
  262.                 5. When received by a Host Node, the FidoCast should
  263.                    be forwarded to all the Nodes that Host is
  264.                    responsible for thus spreading the text as far as
  265.                    possible.
  266.  
  267.                 6. When a FidoCast is posted on a Fido Node, users
  268.                    should be encouraged to capture or download the
  269.                    notice/file and post it to other BBSes or on
  270.                    workplace and community bulletin boards and to
  271.                    pass it on to as wide an audience as possible.
  272.  
  273.                 7. The originator or requestor should provide an
  274.                    update on the status of the FidoCast, i.e., what
  275.                    results were obtained. This report could be in the
  276.                    form of another FidoCast or a FidoNews notice or

  282.      FidoCast is a workable method for introducing broadcast messages
  283.      into the FidoNet. The broadcast appeal has worked in the past as
  284.      you may recall from the Canadian appeal for information about
  285.      pediatric breathing disorders entered into the Network from Fred
  286.      Blauer. The costs associated with a FidoCast are minimal if it
  287.      is passed from point-to-point within the normal scope of Host
  288.      or Region to Node traffic, i.e., bundled with FidoNews or with
  289.      Nodediff Polls and pickups. Even if it is sent out from a few
  290.      central points, the cost is still negligible compared to a
  291.      telegram, mailgram or commercial time on radio or television.
  292.  
  293.      This is only one good way to make FidoNet responsive and
  294.      respectable. It will work because FidoNet Sysops care. They care
  295.      about their systems. They care about their users. They WANT to
  296.      help and often do; without recompense and without hesitation.
  297.  
  298.      We have just scratched the surface of a communications
  299.      revolution that will rival movable type! (Remember, you heard it
  300.      here, first.)

  320.           RECOVERY is a Fido BBS committed to the needs of people in
  321.      Twelve Step programs who are in recovery from various addictions
  322.      and compulsive behaviors.  RECOVERY is also a valuable source of
  323.      information and support for for those who think they may have a
  324.      problem with an an addiction or a compulsive behavior.

  339.      information files.  The AIDS file area contains recent articles
  340.      by John S. James of the San Francisco Sentinal.

  342.           Many people have found the help they need and are able to
  343.      use RECOVERY as a tool for personal growth and as a forum where
  344.      they can share their experience, strength and hope with each
  345.      other.
  346.  
  347.           The AIDS Network area has just started and will soon be a
  348.      nationwide conference for people with AIDS and ARC and for
  349.      those who are interested in learning more about the epidemic.
  350.  
  351.           A similar network for RECOVERY will begin soon.  If you are
  352.      interested in joining either of these echos please let me know.
  353.      I can poll you between the hours of midnight and 3am Pacific
  354.      time if you cannot afford the long distance costs.

  357.      Technical Stuff:
  358.  
  359.           RECOVERY is running on an XT clone (8 mHz) with 640K and a
  360.      20MB hard disk.  The two nodes are multitasking under DesqView
  361.      with independant mail systems, schedules and phone lines, while
  362.      maintaining common message and file systems and one user file.
  363.      The two phone lines are in hunting and are connected by two Hayes
  364.      1200 external modems.
  365.  
  366.           The whole system is operating in one directory, except, of

  370.      course for the message, file and help subdirectories.  All the
  371.      Fido utilities are in a separate directory with a dos path to
  372.      them.  This enables some order in the Fido root directory.
  373.  
  374.           How does all this work in one directory with separate
  375.      schedules and mail systems?  A little history first.  At first it
  376.      was just 2 phone lines, one node number and one mail schedule, so
  377.      the /i switch worked fine except for an occasional crash.  I
  378.      suspect the crash was caused by trying to write to user.bbs,
  379.      system.bbs, nodes.bbs or some-such file simultaneously by both
  380.      tasks.
  381.  
  382.           The next stage was two separate directories with two node
  383.      numbers and separate schedules.  This also meant two user files,
  384.      two system files and two timelog files.  I think you can see the
  385.      nightmare here.  The user file and total number of callers and
  386.      more were totally inaccurate.  A nice man named John Penberthy
  387.      from CHINA BLUE 129/28 saw my plea on the SYSOP echo and sent me
  388.      DPATH.  I was able to have each node in a separate directory with
  389.      DPATH writing to the files that needed to be common.  It worked,
  390.      but that setup brought DesqView to its knees.  It was very slow.
  391.  
  392.           Then came the inspiration.  I saw that it was possible to
  393.      patch FIDO and it's utilities so that I could rename the files
  394.      that I needed to keep separate.  I used PCTools and searched for
  395.      the file name in FIDO that I wanted to change and changed it.
  396.      Some files appear several times in the FIDO code.  The first name
  397.      I changed was FIDO_IBM.  I changed that to FIDO2IBM so that it
  398.      could find its overlays.  the other files I changed were:

  401.                WELCOME1.BBS        WELCOM21.BBS
  402.                MAIL.SYS            MA2L.SYS
  403.                LASTUSER.BBS        LASTUSE2.BBS

  406.           Of course, the new file for the second task is called
  407.      FIDO2IBM.EXE.  The whole procedure is painless and I have patched
  408.      SCANMAIL, TOSSMAIL, ROBOT and other utilities so that they
  409.      recognize the renamed MAIL.SYS.  The utilities don't seem to use
  410.      overlays, so you may rename the patched files anything you like.
  411.      You may use any new file names that you like, as long as the new
  412.      file name is the same number of characters as the original file
  413.      name.
  414.  
  415.           I havn't had any crashes and the system is dependably
  416.      running four separate mail schedules on the two nodes so that I
  417.      can distribute all the incoming mail, nodediffs, fnews and Net125
  418.      echomail without any delay.  I call this whole process 'Blood on
  419.      the Keyboard' but it is really gratifying to see the modified
  420.      system in action.

  423.      About DesqView and FIDO:

  425.           I have not tried DoubleDos or MultiLink, but I know I like

  429.      DesqView better if for only one reason.  Windows!  In addition to
  430.      the windows that allow me to see both tasks operating at the same
  431.      time, I can open a DOS window if I need to do some file shuffling
  432.      and not interupt the two FIDOS.  I can cut and paste text between
  433.      windows and create keyboard macros called script files to speed
  434.      some operations.  The user support at Quarterdeck Office Systems
  435.      if knowledgeable and very helpful.  For example, when I asked
  436.      about setting the clocks for foreground and background tasks for
  437.      FIDO, they had information on what the RBBS folks use
  438.      successfully.  5 foreground and 4 background - High Speed Comm.
  439.  
  440.           They also helped me with a script that allows both tasks to
  441.      start themselves on a re-boot.  Define the ! key the way you
  442.      would start things manually.  When DesqView is started the ! will
  443.      be executed.
  444.  
  445.           A SI in each window shows about a 1.0 in the foreground and
  446.      0.9 in the background with the clone running at 8 mHz.  It is a
  447.      little jerky appearing as the text comes out, but it is still a
  448.      little too fast for me to read at 1200 baud.  Xmodem transfers
  449.      seem to take normal time.

  454.           1.  Is there a fix for the last message read bug?
  455.  
  456.           2.  My Hayes 1200s can use the X4 option.  Can Fido?
  457.  
  458.           3.  Is there a way to start Fido without 'Local Console
  459.               Off' when using the /i switch?
  460.  
  461.           4.  Is it possible to change the privilege for V)ersion to
  462.               sysop?
  463.  
  464.           5.  Is there a way to make ROUTEGEN recognize a node number
  465.               that is the same as the default net number?
  466.  
  467.           6.  Where can I get SETMARK?
